The Giro is often said to be the most difficult stage race in all of cycling. This year’s race will certainly put that label to the test. The race will end on June 2nd in Verona, but not before the riders travel over 2,186 miles throughout the beautiful country of Italy.

There are 32 cyclists with betting odds for the best young rider classification. The following riders are odds on favorites to win the classification:

Miguel Angel Lopez won the white jersey in 2018, and he’s eligible to compete for the jersey again. Lopez will be on one of the best teams in this year’s Giro–Team Astana. He will also be competing for the overall victory. Of the cyclists listed above, only Sam Oomen finished in the Top 5 positions for this jersey in 2018. Oomen finished third, roughly 9’21” behind Lopez.

A newcomer to this competition is Tao Geoghegan Hart. He will be co-leader of Team Sky, now called Team Ineos, after Egan Bernal suffered a broken collar bone and will miss the Giro. His teammate Pavel Sivakov will also be co-leader of the team and is also a threat to win this jersey. But those two aren’t the only Team Ineos riders listed in these odds. Their teammate Ivan Sosa, second in the odds, is also a threat to win the white jersey and the King of the Mountains classification as well.

Who Will Win the White Jersey at the Giro?

It’s hard to predict which one of the three Team Ineos riders will sit high in the standings for the young rider competition. All three of them could possibly compete for this jersey. But, with Sivakov and Hart being named the co-leaders, Sosa will have to work for them and that includes in the mountains. So, I see that working against his chances of winning this jersey.

In reality, Lopez is the man to win this competition again. He will compete for the overall win at this year’s Giro, which by default will place him at the front of this jersey competition. I’m picking Lopez to win this jersey. However, I do believe that Pavel Sivakov is worth a flier as he offers the best value at +2200.

Young Rider Matchups

Of the young rider matchups to wager on, I believe the easiest one is Miguel Angel Lopez (-700) to defeat Ivan Sosa (+400). Lopez is the leader of his team and will be competing for the outright win. Sosa is the #3 rider on his team and will most likely support his teammates. I like Sosa as a young rider, but Lopez should win the jersey and this matchup easily.

Giro d’Italia Points Classification Betting Odds

With over 65 cyclists listed with odds to win this jersey, it’s definitely the hardest one to predict of the classifications. The following riders are odds on favorites to win the points classification:

• Pascal Ackermann (+350)
• Arnaud Demare (+500)
• Fernando Gaviria (+650)

Typically, the points classification is won by the best sprinter of the bunch. Last year, Elia Viviani won the red jersey by 59 points over Sam Bennett. This year, Viviani is the odds on favorite to win again. However, he’s going to have some serious competition.

Pascal Ackerman (+350)

Ackerman is fourth in the sprinter rankings on the season and second in betting odds to win the red jersey. He’s had a decent spring so far, and numerous stage wins in the smaller stage races like the Criterium du Dauphine. However, this will be his first ever Giro.

Arnaud Demare (+500)

Demare is currently ranked 10th among sprinters this year. His best performance in 2019, was sixth in the points classification at Paris – Nice. This will be his third Giro, but he’s never won a stage in this Grand Tour. However, he has won two stages at Tour de France. Demare will have the opportunity to go for the red jersey and the possibility of challenging Viviani for the win.

Fernando Gaviria (+650)

For me, Gaviria is the wild card out of the sprinters. Fernando used to be teammates with Elia Viviani, but now he’s going to be competing against him. That’s going to make things really exciting. Gaviria has four stage wins at the Giro and won this classification in 2017. He skipped the Giro last year and won three stages at the Tour of California instead. He also took two stages at Tour de France. I believe Gaviria has the best chance at dethroning Viviani this year.

Caleb Ewan (+2000)

This is Ewan’s third Giro race and his fourth overall participation in a Grand Tour. That’s not bad for a 24-year-old looking to compete with the best sprinters in the world. On the season, Ewan is 18th in the sprinter rankings, but he has had some success in 2019 despite his ranking. Ewan won multiple stages in the Tour of Turkey this year and has a stage win at the UAE Tour. Caleb has one stage win at the Giro and that came in 2017. He won that stage by out-sprinting Gaviria, Bennett, and Greipel. I believe Ewan offers the best betting value for this competition.

Who Will Win the Points Classification?

Only nine men have ever won the points classification more than once. Viviani is looking to become the 10th. Giacomo Nizzolo is a former two-time winner who won the competition in 2015 and 2016. Don’t sleep on him to win this once again.

I like Viviani as a cyclist. He has a certain panache about him. However, I believe the competition is going to be too much for Viviani to overcome this year. I really like Fernando Gaviria and his +650 odds. He will lead the UAE Team Emirates squad, which means he will get all of the support and team strategies in order to capture the winnable stages. Caleb Ewan will also have the same honors, which is another reason why I believe he offers the best value.

Giro d’Italia King of the Mountains Betting Odds

For this classification, there are nearly 80 riders with betting odds. The following is a list of the favorites with a few potential value bets and realistic longshots.

Simon Yates is not only an odds on favorite to win the King of the Mountains jersey, but he’s also an overall betting favorite to win the Giro d’Italia. Last year, he finished third overall in the standings for this classification. Yates’ full attention will be on winning the General Classification, which means he won’t concern himself with this jersey. Furthermore, he cracked in the high mountains last year, which leads me to believe he’s not the top climber coming into this year’s competition.

King of the Mountains Betting Favorites

Fausto Masnada (+800)

this is the second ever Giro for Fausto and he’s riding well in the high elevations this year. He won the mountains classification for the Giro di Sicilia and he finished sixth in the mountains classification at the Tour of the Alps. However, he did win two stages and finished fifth in the GC. Masnada is on a team where he could go for this jersey if the leader isn’t able to keep up with the top GC contenders. He finished fifth in the Young Riders competition last year.

Mikel Landa (+800)

Landa is one head of the three-headed monsters that Team Movistar is rolling out for the Giro. With Alejandro Valverde out of this year’s Giro due to a crash, Landa will join Carapaz and Amador as the leaders. Of these three, Landa has actually been on the podium. However, Richard Carapaz shocked the sport with a fourth overall finish last year. Landa won the King of the Mountains jersey in 2017, and I believe he has a good shot this year as well.

Giulio Ciccone (+1000)

Giulio finished second last year in this classification and even has one stage win in this tour. This is the only Grand Tour that the Italian participates in and he will be laser-focused on the King of the Mountains jersey once again. However, he might be strapped with the responsibility of helping his leader Bauke Mollema in the higher elevations. The only way I see Ciccone being able to go for this jersey is if Mollema struggles.

Primoz Roglic (+1200)

Roglic isn’t only a threat to win the overall race, but he’s also a threat to win this competition as well. This is his second Giro race and he already has one stage win. Last year, Roglic finished fourth at the Tour de France and announced himself to the cycling world. He certainly has the chance to win both this competition and the overall GC. I’ll detail his chances more in the Outright Winner section.

Best King of the Mountains Betting Value

Ivan Ramiro Sosa (+1600)

As mentioned in the Young Rider section above, Sosa is one of the top riders for Team Ineos, formerly known as Team Sky. He won the mountains competition at the Tour of Colombia earlier this year and even finished second overall in the GC. He’s a strong climber, but might have to expend most of his energy helping his co-leaders.

Miguel Angel Lopez (+1600)

Like Yates and Roglic, Lopez is an overall betting favorite to win the Giro. He finished 3rd last year in the standings and won the young rider competition. Lopez has the potential to capture this competition if he falls too far behind in the GC.

Mikel Nieve (+2800)

Nieve won this jersey in 2016. He has a good chance to win it this year as well. It all depends on his responsibilities for helping Simon Yates in this race. There’s a chance that Nieve could get free reign to win some key mountain points. Or he could also be strapped to pacing Yates throughout the Giro. That’s why his odds are this high.

Top King of the Mountains Longshot

Tom Dumoulin (+5000) is one of the GC favorites as he won the Giro in 2017. He finished second last year to Froome and then finished second overall in the Tour de France last year to Thomas. This year, there’s no Froome or Thomas in the Giro, so Dumoulin has a shot. With that said, Dumoulin finished seven in this classification last year and eighth in 2017. If he has to go on the attack in the mountains or keep pace with other GC climbers, then Tom could be the longshot pick to win.

Who Wins This Year’s King of the Mountains Jersey?

By process of elimination, we can rule out just about all of the riders that will contend for the GC. Then we can also rule the riders that have to support their captains. With that said, we’re looking at a potential showdown between Thomas De Gendt and Fausto Masnada for the win in my opinion. I also wouldn’t count out Sosa. De Gendt has won a Giro stage before and finished third overall in 2012. But there’s something about Fausto Masnada that caught my attention this year. I love watching De Gendt’s solo attacks in the mountains. It’s become an annual enjoyment for me each year at the Grand Tours. However, I’m going with Fausto Masnada to win this competition.

King of the Mountains Matchups

Of the dozen or so available matchups to bet on, I believe the best one is Valerio Conti (+150) vs Thomas De Gendt (-200). Conti certainly has a shot at winning, but I believe he will most likely finish somewhere in the Top 5 to 7. I think De Gendt will battle it out for the jersey, but fall short in the end. However, for this matchup, I’m taking De Gendt to win.

Giro d’Italia Outright Winner Betting Odds

Most cycling betting sites have odds listed for roughly 40 to 50 riders on winning the overall Giro. The following riders are considered the betting favorites to win the three-week Grand Tour and finish on top of the General Classification:

Primoz Roglic (+162)

Roglic is the overall favorite for this race and it’s quite remarkable how fast he’s ascended in the sport. Six years ago, Roglic was a fan watching the Giro. Three years ago, he made his debut and won the time trial. Now, he’s leading Team Jumbo-Visma and in solid form for his 4th overall Grand Tour, according to Cycling News:

“The biggest challenge will be how I can lead the [Jumbo-Visma] guys and what we can do in those few weeks. It’s my fourth Grand Tour, and my second Giro, but it’s my first time as a leader. Cycling isn’t just about what you can do alone, and the biggest challenge is to have a strong team around you when leading that team.”

Already in 2019, Roglic has won the Tour of Romandie, the Tirreno-Adriatico, and the UAE Tour. For the record, those were the only three races that he entered in this year. Now, he will try to win the Giro d’Italia in his second ever appearance. Can the talented Roglic conquer the rest of the favorites?

Tom Dumoulin (+250)

Dumoulin is one of the top GC cyclists in the world. Last year, he impressed fans, critics, and peers by finishing second at the Giro and the Tour de France. He’s only two years removed from winning the Giro in 2017 and already has four stage wins in the first Grand Tour of the year. Furthermore, he has nineteen Top 10’s on stages in this race as well.

As the leader of Team Sunweb, Dumoulin hasn’t performed as well this year as he hoped for. Tom hasn’t won any race or stage this year. And, his best overall finish was 4th at the Tirreno-Adriatico, which Roglic won. With that said, he’s keeping a positive mindset heading into the Giro and hoping for a strong performance as one of the pre-race favorites:

“Last year, it didn’t go smoothly at all during the spring. So it’s good that it’s been working out. My results this year have been OK – not the best, but they’ve been good. But even having had a smoother spring than last year, it’s no guarantee that my shape for the Giro is going to be any better. There really is a whole bunch of favorites. I could name five riders that could win it – who definitely have a big chance of winning it. I’m one of them, I hope. But it’s not like I’m going there as the big guy – it’s not going to be like that.”

I like Dumoulin’s chances this year. There’s three individual time trials and Dumoulin could put away the competition or make up serious ground on the other GC favorites with these time trials. Currently, Tom is ranked fourth in the time trial rankings. For this race, only Victor Campenaerts is ranked higher as he’s No. 2 in the standings. Dumoulin will also have a strong teammate in Sam Oomen who was third in the young rider competition last year and ninth overall in the GC. Tom urged Oomen to ride the Giro in a supporting role.

Simon Yates (+275)

Perhaps, no other rider comes into this race with more to prove and more intensity than Simon Yates. The 26-year-old Brit led this race last year for 13 stages before suffering an epic collapse in the final days. He went from first to 21st overall. Yates bounced back later in the year when he won the third Grand Tour of the season – the Vuelta a Espana.

Now, Yates will return to Italy and exact his revenge on a tour and the field. According to Simon, he has unfinished business to take care of:

“In a way, I have unfinished business at the Giro, but I would just like to have another go. We were so close last year so I’m motivated to give it another go, and I’m trying to arrive in the best shape possible to try and do that. I wanted to go back to the Giro, that’s what’s driving me at the moment, and that’s what I have the passion to get out of bed for every morning. I’m approaching the Giro the same way I would do any other race.”

Yates’ director also stated that the team is solely focused on winning the Giro, so don’t expect them to contend or win many stages.

It’s hard to judge Yates’ form this year as he’s only been in three races. But, with his team focused on getting Yates the win, I really like his chances this year.

Vincenzo Nibali (+650)

Nibali comes into his eighth Giro and 21st overall Grand Tour as the leader of Bahrain Merida and one of the betting favorites. He’s a two-time Giro d’Italia winner having last won in 2016. He’s also a Tour de France winner (2014) and a Vuelta a Espana winner (2010).

Like with Dumoulin, the three time trials could be key for Nibali to remain in contention for the overall GC. However, the key for Nibali is to not lose too much time on the individual time trials so that he can crawl back in the last week and pass up his rivals, according to his coach Paolo Slongo:

“The time trials perhaps favor the likes of Primoz Roglic [Jumbo-Visma] and Tom Dumoulin [Team Sunweb], but the final week includes lots of climbing, and so lots of terrain where the better climbers can attack and try to pull back any time lost. We hope that’s how Vincenzo will perform. We’re used to having to fight back and pull back time; that suits Vincenzo’s style. There are a lot of climbs over 2,000 meters and he usually goes well at altitude, so we’re optimistic.”

At 35 years old, it’s hard to imagine that Nibali has many days left at the top of the sport. Although this Giro suits his skills in the higher climbs, I believe the time trials will put him too far back and he won’t be able to make up the time on riders like Roglic.

Miguel Angel Lopez (+1000)

Giro D'italia 2020 Standings

With Egan Bernal out of the Giro due to a pre-race crash in practice, Miguel Angel Lopez becomes the top Colombian cyclist in the Grand Tour. As mentioned already, he finished third overall last year at the Giro and also won the Young Rider competition. That was the 25-year-old’s first ever Giro. So, he’s coming into his second one with experience and arguably the best team.

Lopez will be the leader of Astana and will have the support of Pello Bilbao who finished sixth overall in the 2018 Giro d’Italia. Additionally, Lopez is already in good form for the season as he won the Tour of Colombia and the Volta a Catalunya. As of now, Lopez isn’t expected to race the Tour de France. So, his focus will be on the Giro and then the Vuelta in the fall.

With that said, Lopez has the team, the talent, and the schedule to push for a Giro victory in 2019. Can the 25-year-old upset the rest of the favorites?

Mikel Landa (+1600)

Mikel Landa is one of the favorites, but he’s in a precarious position. He’s expected to leave Movistar at the end of the season and most likely replace Nibali as the leader of Bahrain. Additionally, he’s part of a three-pronged attack for Movistar in the Giro. Landa will join Richard Carapaz and Andrey Amador as the leaders.

Landa is a former King of the Mountains winner for the Giro, having won it in 2017. He’s also captured three stage wins in this Grand Tour and took home third place in the GC for 2015. That’s the highest finish of the three Movistar GC contenders.

Landa has also finished fourth in the GC for the Tour de France and won a stage at the Vuelta. The 2019 season has been more about Landa preparing for the Grand Tours than trying to win any races. With that said, there are a lot of obstacles in his way including two other teammates. Of the favorites, I would avoid Mikel unless Yates, Roglic, and Dumoulin all crash out.

The Best Giro d’Italia GC Betting Value

The following two cyclists offer betting value based on their current Giro d’Italia odds and recent career success.

Richard Carapaz (+5000)

As mentioned above, Carapaz joins Landa and Amador as the three riders from Movistar with GC aspirations. Last year, Carapaz finished fourth overall. He has dreams of a podium finish in 2019. But which rider will support the other? And, with Landa leaving at the end of the season, it might force Movistar to go with Carapaz or Amador. Carapaz also just won a smaller regional stage race and rode well in Colombia earlier this year. He’s shown better form than Landa.

Furthermore, this drama over the actual leader is going to hurt the team’s chances if they don’t get it sorted quickly. As for betting, I would rather take Carapaz and his +5000 odds than Landa at +1600.

Tao Geoghegan Hart (+5000)

For Hart, his goal was competing at the Giro d’Italia this year and he has prepared well for it. Speaking during the Tour of the Alps, Hart commented on the Giro:

“I like racing in Italy, even if this win is here in Austria. The Giro d’Italia is the big objective of the season for me and this is one of my final races for that.”

Tao went on to finish second overall in the Tour of the Alps, which is the final preparation for the Giro. He won two of the five stages and never finished worse than ninth. It’s a big reason why Hart was named co-leader of Team Ineos, formerly known as Team Sky. And his teammate Pavel Sivakov won the Tour of the Alps this year. Both riders will participate in the Giro for the first time in their respective careers.

Top Longshot to Win the 2019 Giro d’Italia

Ivan Ramiro Sosa (+6600) is the third member of the Team Ineos team that has a shot at having the best legs in the Giro. Additionally, Sosa is probably the best climber of the bunch. He will be a threat for the young rider, the king of the mountains and even to his own teammates if he’s on form. I believe he’s the best of the longshots and one to keep an eye on this year.

GC Matchups

Bet365 has a list of matchups to choose from for this race. Of the GC contenders, I like the matchup between Simon Yates (-200) and Vincenzo Nibali (+150).

I believe Yates is in better form and has the better team than Nibali. He also has youth on his side as well. For this matchup, it’s Yates all the way.

Giro d’Italia Team Classification Betting Odds

The following teams are considered the odds on favorites to win the team classification:

• Astana (+125)
• Movistar (+350)
• Team Ineos (+500)
• Bahrain Merida (+800)
• Mitchelton Scott (+800)
• Team Jumbo-Visma (+2800)
• Team Sunweb (+2800)

There are over 20 teams in the Giro, but the winner is going to come from the squads listed above. Team Ineos will be without Bernal, Froome, and Thomas in this race. They are sending their youngest roster ever to a Grand Tour. With that said, I don’t see them beating out the top teams.

Bahrain Merida and Mitchelton-Scott both have squads solely focused on their leaders winning the Giro. Of the two, Mitchelton-Scott has the better chance of winning this classification. Simon Yates will have Estaban Chaves and Mikel Nieve supporting him. Both men have won multiple stages. In fact, Chaves finish second overall for the GC in 2016.

Team Jumbo-Visma and Team Sunweb offer the best betting value as they have solid squads that will support their leaders for the overall GC. However, Roglic of Jumbo-Visma and Dumoulin of Sunweb are also favorites to win the time trials. So, these teams could see multiple stage wins as well. Sunweb probably has the better overall squad.

Astana and Movistar are the favorites, but for me, I like Movistar’s chances better. They have a three-headed monster competing for the GC. Astana has one rider in Lopez. All three of their top guys have won stages in this race. Additionally, Landa has finished third overall while both Amador and Carapaz have finished fourth overall.

Astana will be tough to beat, but I’m taking Movistar to win this competition. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mitchelton-Scott won it either.

Final Thoughts on the 2019 Giro d’Italia

Without Chris Froome in the mix, this Giro is going to be exciting. We have a handful of riders that will battle it out for three weeks in an attempt to win the first Grand Tour of the year. Of those riders, I believe the winner will come from one of these five favorites:

• Simon Yates
• Primoz Roglic
• Tom Dumoulin
• Vincenzo Nibali
• Miguel Angel Lopez

With that said, it’s really difficult to pick the winner. But, let’s start with a process of elimination. Nibali is a tremendous Grand Tour rider, but at 35 years old, I think his best days are behind him. He’s looked good in races leading up to the Giro, but I don’t like his chances in making up lost time due to three time trials. Plus, his team isn’t as strong as others.

Miguel Angel Lopez is a great young rider on the cusp of being a Grand Tour winner. He’s also on one of the best teams in the race. I believe he will challenge for a podium spot, but I think he will come up short in winning this year’s Giro. I’m not sure he has the time trial skills to hang with the other GC contenders. And I don’t see him beating his rivals by a lot of time in the high mountains.

That leaves us with three riders to choose from, and this is where it gets really hard. Of the GC contenders, Dumoulin is the best time trial rider. He also won the 2017 Giro and finished second last year. Roglic has been on form this year, so far, and is the second best time trial rider of the GC contenders. Lastly, Yates who had an epic collapse last year, is the third best GC time trial rider and is dead set on winning this year. All three men can hang in the mountains as well.

Of the three, I believe Yates has the best team. And I believe that’s going to be the difference in winning this year’s Giro. Simon showed that he could learn from his mistakes in the 2018 Giro by winning the Vuelta last year. His entire team is focused on helping him win the Giro this year and he has two very strong riders to support him.

As much as I want to pick Dumoulin to win, I think Yates will win this year. I don’t see an epic collapse in this year’s Giro. As for Roglic, I don’t count him out at all. I wish I could pick all three of these guys to win. I wouldn’t be surprise if Yates, Dumoulin, and Roglic were the podium finishers.

The Giro d’Italia 2019 is a Grand Tour cycling stage race that is scheduled from May 12 to June 2, 2019 in Italy. This year’s race will be the 102nd running of the Giro d’Italia and it is the first Grand Race of the year.

This year’s Giro d’Italia will begin with an 8.2 km time trial in Bologna and will also end with a 15.6 km time trial in Verona. The race consists of 21 stages totalling 3.518.5 km. Last year, Chris Froome won the race last year and he was joined at the podium by second placer Tom Dumoulin and third placer Miguel Angel Lopez.

This year, defending championFroome had decided to skip the Giro in order to focus on the 2019 Tour de France. In his absence, 2018 runner-up and 2017 winner Tom Dumoulin is the odds on favorite to win the race.

Who Are The Favorites?

Defending Giro d’Italia champion Chris Froome will not be here to defend his crown because he has chosen to skip the race and focus on his preparations for the Tour de France. That leaves 2017 winner Tom Dumoulin as the most recent Giro d’Italia champion in the current field. The Dutchman also placed 2nd in the Giro D’Italia last year, the only cyclist to finish within a minute of Froome in the race and these recent Giro performances are the reason why Dumoulin is the top betting favorite to win this year’s race.

The 28-year old Maastricht, Netherlands native has not won a race this year as of this writing but he placed 6th in the UAE Tour and 4th in the Tirreno Adriatico in the previous months. Dumoulin spoke about his preference for the Giro D’Italia over the Tour de France this year, making us believe that he is more than ready to reclaim the crown this year.

Simon Yates finished 21st in this race last year but he won three stages and held the pink jersey after stages 6-18. Yates had a strong 2018 as he was also 2nd placer in the Paris-Nice, Tour de Pologne and 4th in the Volta a Catalunya. This year, Yates finished 25th in the Paris-Nice and 13th in the Volta a Catalunya.

Primoz Roglic won the Tour de Romandie and Tour of the Basque Country last year and is this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico winner. The 29-year old Slovenian also won the first ever UAE Tour last February.

22-year old Colombian Egan Bernal is one of the up and coming riders this season. Bernal won the 2018 Tour of California and the recent 2019 Paris-Nice. Bernal also finished 3rd in the time trial of the 2019 National Road Championships in Colombia, 3rd overall in the 2019 Volta a Catalunya and 4th in the 2019 Tour Colombia.

2016 winner Vincenzo Nibali is another former champion who is focusing his efforts on the 2019 Giro d’Italia. Last January, Nibali said that the Giro will be his primary goal for 2019. Nibali also won the Giro d’Italia in 2013, placed 2nd in 2011 and finished third in 2012 and 2017. Given the announced route of the 2019 Giro d’Italia, Nibali’s all-around versatility should be an edge in the race.

Who Wins?

When you look at the names who have confirmed their participation in the 2019 Giro d’Italia, a pair of former winners stand out. First is Tom Dumoulin who obviously has the best results in the Giro the past two years and then there is two-time maglia rosa winner Vincenzo Nibali whose all-around skills may be best suited for the 2019 Giro D’Italia. Nibali defends himself well in the time trials and is a strong finisher as gives out his best in the third week of competition. He is also a mentally tough rider who can overcome critical moments because of his “doesn’t give a damn attitude”. And then of course he is a specialist in the Grand Tours, being one of only seven cyclists to win the three Grand Tours in his career.

When it comes to the classification winner, Tom Dumoulin is the man to beat no doubt about that. But when it comes to betting value, I will go with Vincenzo Nibali to win the 2019 Giro d’Italia.
